Derrike Cope will drive the no.15 Rick Ware Racing car in the Daytona 500
The 1990 winner comes back to The Great American Race.
The grid for the 2021 Daytona 500 keeps building up. It has been announced earlier on Tuesday that Derrike Cope, the winner of the 1990 edition of the race, will participate in this year’s race. He will drive Rick Ware Racing’s no.15 car. Most importantly, Cope will become the second-oldest competitor of the Daytona 500 at the age of 62.
Derrike Cope is excited to return to the World Center of Racing: “I am really looking forward to running this year’s Daytona 500 with Rick Ware Racing. I have known Rick and his family for a long time and I am excited to have the opportunity to go to Daytona and race for another win! I am excited to have Don Perry with Jacob Company as the primary sponsor as well. I want to thank Mike and Matt Kohler and Bill Woehlemann with StarCom Fiber for making this all possible! I could not be more excited to get back to Daytona!”
Rick Ware himself is happy to have Cope in the team: “We are excited to partner together with Derrike on his final Daytona 500 start. Derrike is a former Daytona 500 champion and has had a great career in NASCAR. I look forward to seeing the no.15 Jacob Companies Chevrolet on track in a couple of weeks!”
Derrike Cope’s qualified for the Daytona 500 for the last time back in 2004. He drove the no.50 Arnold Motorsports car. Cope started 42nd and finished 30th.
